Sault College administrative leaders are “generally pleased” with an arbitrator's decision to settle a contract dispute with Ontario college faculty. Professors, instructors, counsellors and librarians were on strike for five weeks before being legislated back to work in November. The decision, announced in late December, includes a 7.75 per cent raise over four years for faculty, one-time payments of $900 for each full-time faculty member and $450 for every partial-load employee. “The award itself looks reasonable,” Janice Beatty, vice-president of student services, told Sault College's board of governors during a meeting on Dec. 21. “It looks like something we can manage and live with, so we were generally pleased.” She told the board “there aren't a lot of significant changes” in the decision with wage increases that were “on the table” during negotiations and “minor language changes.” “The language looks, to me, very similar to the language that the college has had prior to the award,” said Beatty. “It's something that we think is reasonable and we're confident we can live with it.” Vice-president academic Colin Kirkwood told governors college brass are “looking forward to just moving forward. “We're anxious to get back to providing the services that the students are here for,” he said. Classes ended Dec. 22 for the Christmas break. The fall semester ends mid-January. The strike prompted 255 Sault College students to withdraw from their studies.
